Feeling Called Out and the Flip Side

Have you ever felt triggered by your Enneagram type? Several people I know have been quite bothered when they learn their type. The Enneagram, in particular, can feel as though you’re being called out for your negative qualities. I too have been known to get hung up on just the “bad” side of my personality type. In fact, one piece of advice for identifying your personality type is to pay attention to what triggers you!

That said, there are positive flip sides to what might seem like negative personality traits, so let’s take a look at each Enneagram type and explore both sides of the coin.

Type 1: The Reformer

Called Out: Oh, the perfectionist tendencies of a Type 1! Does it sting to hear that you can be overly critical or inflexible? The inner critic in your head is always telling you that things could be better… that YOU can be better. It’s not afraid to point out when they’re not. Black-and-white thinking sometimes makes you harsh, whether it’s with yourself or others.

The Flip Side: Here’s the good news: your attention to detail and high standards mean that you strive for excellence in all that you do. The fact that you feel things can be better leads you to seek justice for others. When things go wrong, you have ideas for how to fix them, and you step up to take action!

Type 2: The Helper

Called Out: Being called out for being “too needy” or “overbearing” doesn’t sit well with a Type 2. You think you are helping others, so hearing you are perceived as people-pleasing or meddling does not feel good. You might ignore your own needs in the pursuit of others’ happiness, which leaves you feeling resentful.

The Flip Side: When you are true to yourself, your warmth and generosity shine! You have an intuitive sense of what people need and are always there to lend a hand. Your selflessness and care foster strong, loving relationships. The world could use more of your genuine kindness.

Type 3: The Achiever

Called Out: If you’re a Type 3, you might cringe when you hear that you can be overly competitive or concerned with appearances. You’re driven by the need for success, but this drive sometimes makes you lose sight of your true self. Chasing the spotlight can lead to burnout and a lack of fulfillment.

The Flip Side: Your ambition and determination motivate not only yourself but also those around you. You set goals and achieve them, showing others what’s possible. You inspire others to achieve, too!  When you tap into your authentic self, you become a true leader.

Type 4: The Individualist

Called Out: Type 4s are often called out for being too moody or self-absorbed. Talk about feeling triggered by your Enneagram type! Other people don’t always understand the depth of your emotions, and this can lead to feeling misunderstood or overly dramatic. Sometimes, you get stuck in a cycle of longing for what you don’t have.

The Flip Side: Your deep feelings allow you to create beauty from your experiences. This creativity and authenticity are your gifts to the world. When you are vulnerable, it encourages others to explore their emotions and embrace their unique selves. You show us that it’s okay to be different.

Type 5: The Investigator

Called Out: Type 5s might wince when they’re told they can be aloof or overly analytical. You guard your personal space and knowledge, which sometimes comes off as cold or detached. Your tendency to withdraw can make it hard for others to connect with you.

The Flip Side: Your analytical mind and thirst for knowledge make you an expert in your field. You have an incredible ability to focus, think critically, and solve complex problems. Your insights often provide others with a deeper understanding of the world.

Type 6: The Loyalist

Called Out: If you’re a Type 6, the label of being “overly anxious” or “paranoid” might hit a nerve. Being told you find things to worry about is offensive in a world of troubling things! Sometimes, your need for security keeps you stuck in a loop of worrying about what could go wrong.

The Flip Side: Loyalty and preparedness are invaluable to the people around you! They can count on you in times of crisis because you’ve already thought of every possible scenario. Not only that, but you have also planned a response. Your vigilance helps create safety and stability for yourself and those you care about.

Type 7: The Enthusiast

Called Out: The Type 7 in you might feel triggered when you’re called out for being impulsive or avoiding discomfort. Your desire for new experiences can lead to overcommitting or running away from emotional pain. People might see you as scatterbrained because you’re always on to the next adventure.

The Flip Side: You bring joy, optimism, and creativity wherever you go! Your enthusiasm is contagious, and you have a knack for turning even mundane situations into something fun. You help others see the lighter side of life and embrace spontaneity.

Type 8: The Challenger

Called Out: Being called “too aggressive” or “domineering” doesn’t sit well with a Type 8. Your intensity can sometimes be intimidating, and your need to be in control may push people away. Others might feel like they have to walk on eggshells around you.

The Flip Side: You’re a natural leader who stands up for what’s right and defends the underdog. The strength and protectiveness you exhibit make others feel safe. Your courage and confidence empower others to be brave and take action. When you lead from the heart, you create powerful change.

Type 9: The Peacemaker

Called Out: Type 9s might feel a bit called out when told they’re “too passive” or “avoidant.” Your desire to keep the peace sometimes leads you to suppress your own needs and opinions. This avoidance can leave you feeling disconnected and stuck.

The Flip Side: Your calm, accepting nature brings harmony to any environment. You have a gift for seeing multiple perspectives and finding common ground. Your ability to create a sense of peace helps others feel understood and valued.

Still feeling triggered by your Enneagram type?

It’s natural to feel triggered by your Enneagram type and the “called out” aspects of our personality. But the truth is, these same traits can be powerful tools when embraced and balanced. So, next time you feel that sting of recognition, remember: there’s a flip side to it, and it’s pretty amazing.
