Before I settled on Rebecca Pearson as an Enneagram 9, I originally thought she might be an Enneagram 2. While she was very willing to sacrifice her own needs for those of her family, I came to realize that the motivation behind it was that of a 9. A brief explanation of 9s will help understand why later.
Enneagram 9s are referred to as “The Peacemaker.” They are motivated by maintaining peace in both their inner and outer worlds. As part of the triangle of the Enneagram diagram, 9s take on characteristics of the Six such as excessive worry and higher reactivity during times of high stress. When things are going well, they move toward qualities of Threes and begin to recognize their value and potential. You can find detailed information about Enneagram 9 at The Enneagram Institute and Truity.*
Rebecca is the matriarch of The Pearson clan on This Is Us. While we start with her husband Jack as the central character of the series, the later seasons transition to her as the core figure of the family.

Deciding Her Type
The difficulty I had determining that Rebecca Pearson is an Enneagram 9 is part of how I decided she IS a 9. At various points rewatching This Is Us, I thought she was a 2, 3, 6, 7, and an 8. It is common for Enneagram 9s to seemingly demonstrate characteristics of all the types except Nine! It was tempting to see her as an Enneagram 2 because she is willing to sacrifice her needs for those of her family. However, while a 2 does this to be loved, a 9 does it to maintain harmony. That seems more like Rebecca’s motivation to me for a variety of reasons.
Relationship to Her Mother
It is common throughout This Is Us to see Rebecca struggle with her relationship with her mother, Janet. From the time she is a child, we know that Rebecca’s mother is very particular and rather controlling based on a number of flashbacks. It is not surprising that Rebecca would learn not to assert herself in order to keep her mother happy. This is another trait of an Enneagram 9. Season 6, Episode 7 gives us a glimpse of this when Rebecca tries desperately to make Thanksgiving dinner to her mom’s high standards.
Avoiding Conflict
Nines are known for their desire to avoid conflict and unpleasantness, and Rebecca tells us herself about her tendency to do so. In Season 3, Episode 9, she is trying to help her granddaughter Tess through a difficult time. She explains to Tess that she has long tried to keep her emotions inside. She pushed down her secrets and things that were unhappy. By doing so, Rebecca ended up having to deal with the pain this caused in her body. Trying to escape the unpleasantness is characteristic of the Enneagram 9.
Rebecca’s Biggest Secret
When Rebecca keeps William’s identity from Randall, we see a classic Nine pattern at work. While she tells herself she’s protecting her family, there’s something deeper happening – the Nine’s intense need to avoid anything that might disturb the family’s peace. In the flashbacks, we see Rebecca wrestling with this choice. She’s not just worried about William being an addict; she’s terrified of losing the peaceful family life she’s built. Like many Nines, Rebecca convinces herself that avoiding the hard conversation now is better than facing the potential upheaval it might cause. Of course, as we see in Season 1, Episode 8, this decision eventually leads to exactly the kind of conflict she was trying to avoid.
Enneagram 9 Traits as a Mother
Rebecca’s struggle with sleep training the babies shows us how being a Nine affects her parenting. When Kevin won’t stop crying, we see her natural Nine tendency to want to fix whatever’s causing distress. It’s more than just being a soft-hearted mom – it’s about her deep need to restore calm. In the same episode (Season 5, Episode 4,) she tells Jack something really telling: she has trouble pushing the kids when they seem unhappy. This is such a Nine trait – the desire to keep everyone comfortable can sometimes get in the way of doing what’s necessary. Thank goodness for Jack, who helps her find balance between peace and progress.
Recognizing Rebecca Pearson as an Enneagram 9
Following Rebecca’s journey through This Is Us helps us understand what makes a Nine tick. We see her move from someone who often pushed her own needs aside to keep others happy, to a woman who learns to speak up while still caring about family harmony. Her story shows us that being a peacemaker doesn’t mean you have to disappear – it’s about finding ways to bring peace while still being true to yourself. Through Rebecca, we see both the challenges Nines face and the growth they’re capable of when they learn to balance taking care of others with taking care of themselves.
