While some This Is Us viewers might type her differently, looking closely at her core motivations and behaviors reveals strong evidence that Kate Pearson is an Enneagram 3, The Achiever. From her relationship with her mother to her struggles with self-worth, Kate’s story aligns with many classic Three patterns.
Enneagram 3s are known for determining their worth based on their success and achievements. That can vary from appearing a certain way to accomplishing certain tasks to acquiring accolades. The measure of success is not always the same with a Three. You can learn more about the qualities of Threes at The Enneagram Institute and on Truity. *
Here are your standard reminders:
- I’m using examples from the series, so there will be spoilers.
- I’m not going in any kind of order related to chronological or episode order.
Kate Pearson is the second member of “The Big Three” to be born. A whole lot of Kate’s story revolves around her disordered eating and attempts at weight loss. However, there is so much more to her than that! As the series progresses, she becomes a mother, a successful vocal teacher, and a source of strength for her entire family.
Let’s explore why Kate Pearson exemplifies the characteristics of an Enneagram 3.
Helping or Motivating?
At first glance, Kate Pearson exhibits traits that might suggest she’s an Enneagram 2. She seems to regularly put herself on hold in order to be there for her older brother, Kevin. However, as we learn more about Kate throughout the series, I would argue that this is not out of the desires of The Helper. Her behavior shows potential influence from a 2 wing. That said, it seems more likely to me that her real superpower here is motivating Kevin, which is indicative of an Enneagram 3.
Similarities to 9
There are also plenty of hints that Kate might be an Enneagram 9. She struggles with lethargy and lack of motivation at many points throughout her life. But I think this is actually another signal that she is an Enneagram 3. The Three takes on unhealthy characteristics of the Nine when they are in stress, and I believe that is what we see with Kate.
Trying to Please Rebecca
From childhood, Kate appears to have a deep desire to earn her mother’s approval. This desire shapes her core motivations. Pleasing Rebecca varies from playing piano and singing well to paying careful attention to what she eats. Enneagram 3s determine what success means based on what their family deems important. This could explain why one of her defining characteristics is her weight. Rebecca placed a lot of emphasis on Kate’s eating habits, trying to get her to eat healthy foods and fewer snacks. She got attention and praise based on her eating habits, so she identified them as a source of achievement.
Weight Loss Motivation
Kate’s fixation on weight loss stems primarily from her concern with image and achievement rather than health considerations. She seems to think that her worth is tied to her size, and that her happiness is tied to both. The more she struggles with weight loss, the more she feels like a failure. It doesn’t seem to matter that she is an invaluable source of support to her brothers.
Trouble Accessing Feelings
Enneagram 3s are at the center of the “feelings” group but have the hardest time identifying and acknowledging their feelings. Kate Pearson is no exception. In Season 2, Episode 9 all she wants to do after her first miscarriage is to throw herself into work. While for some it might be just a distraction, for Kate it is about avoiding her feelings about the loss.
Threes can also get very wrapped up in trying to achieve based on how others define success. By doing so, they lose sight of what they want. Kate tells her brothers in Season 6, Episode 9 that she can’t even imagine her future… what she wants for herself or what it will hold.
Competition with Her Brothers
Another sign that Kate Pearson is an Enneagram 3 is when she thinks she is in competition with her brothers, another Three trait. Even when she was a little girl, Kate expresses her frustration that the boys always seem to be ahead of her. For example, when she hadn’t yet lost any of her baby teeth in Season 6, Episode 16.
In a flashback in Season 6, Episode 9, Kate and her brothers have snuck into the old, now-empty pool and are hanging out. She shares how unfulfilling her life is because she’s not doing anything with it. Kate tells her brothers that they are way ahead of her because of what they have achieved. Even though they have problems of their own, she sees only their accomplishments.
Accomplishment = Worth
Sticking with what we learn about Kate in Season 6, Episode 9, she tells Toby that she is finally happy. Her happiness is based on the things she has accomplished at this point. She has made a life for her family and found a job that she loves.
There is another flashback in this episode to Jack trying to get her to swim when she is a little girl. He tells her that the family believes in her, but she needs to believe she can do it. In present day, we see grown-up Kate obtain a huge sense of accomplishment after climbing a big hill in San Francisco. We see that what Kate needs to see her worth is success and accomplishment.
Finding Her Own Success
Kate Pearson’s journey throughout This Is Us mirrors the growth path of a Three. Her initial focus on external validation and achievement gradually shifts as she learns to define success on her own terms. Whether through her career, her role as a mother, or her personal growth, Kate’s story shows how Threes can move from seeking worth through accomplishments to finding genuine fulfillment. By the end of the series, we see Kate finally embracing her achievements not just for how others view them, but for what they mean to her personally.
